About Us

Committees

Local 38 has four committees which assist in various aspects of member engagement, education and activism.

Each committee is comprised of five volunteer CUPE Local 38 members, plus a representative from the Table Officers. Committee elections take place at the General Membership meeting in May of each year.

Committees include:

Equal Opportunities Committee

The Equal Opportunities Committee reviews and reports on issues related to employment equity, diversity, inclusion and social movements, including making policy development recommendations. The committee recommends courses that may be of interest to the membership or stewards, and encourages members to participate in local workshops and events. Historically, this committee has organized volunteers to help out at the Women’s Centre and other charitable work.

Occupational Health & Safety Committee

The Occupational Health & Safety Committee provides education on health and safety matters in the workplace. Duties include arranging and participating in on-site inspections, as well as investigating and reporting back to the membership on health and safety concerns. The committee often discusses and participates in online training offered by the Alberta Municipal Health & Safety Association (AMHSA) to keep committee members up to date on new rules and legislation.

Public Relations & Education Committee

The Public Relations & Education Committee keeps the membership informed of important issues and labour activities through producing the Local’s two monthly newsletters – the CUPE Wire and CUPE Connection. Additionally, committee members recommend courses, schools and seminars that may be of interest to the membership, and are involved in the selection of scholarship recipients for the Local’s annual post-secondary essay competition.

Social Committee

The Social Committee plans and organizes annual functions for Local 38 members, including the Retirement Banquet and Children’s Christmas Party. The committee is regularly discussing new event suggestions.
